He was a great Companion (ṣaḥāba). He was handsome, and for this reason, Gabriel would often come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his likeness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him as an envoy to Caesar. He became Muslim in the early days of Islam. However, he was not present at the Battle of Badr. Yet he participated in the subsequent battles. Later, he took part in the Battle of Yarmūk. He resided in a place called Murra to the west of Damascus. He remained there until he passed away during the caliphate of Muʿāwiya.
In this year, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Samura b. Ḥabīb b. ʿAbd al-Shams al-Qurashī Abū Saʿīd al-Abshamī also passed away. This person became Muslim during the conquest of Mecca. According to one narration, he participated in the expedition of Muʾta. He went on military campaigns to the provinces of Khurāsān. He conquered Sijistān, Kabul, and other places. He had a house in Damascus. He resided in Basra. There is another narration stating that he resided in the city of Merv. According to the statements of Muḥammad b. Saʿd and others, he died in Basra in the fiftieth year of the Hijra. There is another narration that he died in the fifty-first year. Ziyād led his funeral prayer. He left behind a few male children. In the pre-Islamic period, his name was ʿAbd al-Kilāl. It is also said that it was ʿAbd al-Kulub. There is a weak opinion that he bore the name ʿAbd al-Kaʿba. When he became Muslim, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the name ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. He was one of the two people who acted as envoys between Muʿāwiya and Ḥasan. May Allah be pleased with them both.
In this year, ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ al-Thaqafī Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṭāʾifī also passed away. Both he and his brother Ḥakam were Companions (ṣaḥāba). He came to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) with the delegation of the Thaqīf tribe, and the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed him as the governor of Ṭāʾif.
Abū Bakr and ʿUmar kept him in this position. He served as the governor of the people of Ṭāʾif for a long time, and finally died in the fiftieth year of the Hijra. According to another narration, he died in the fifty-first year of the Hijra. May Allah be pleased with him.
