The death of this person was mentioned among the events of the eighty-fifth year of the Hijra. He was one of the jurists and scholars among the Tābiʿūn (the generation following the Companions). ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb said: "I have not seen anyone who knows hadith and fiqh better than him."
Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān said: "There are ten jurists in Medina, and they are: Eban b. ʿUthmān, Khārija b. Zayd, Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh, Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, Sulaymān b. Yasār, ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtba, ʿUrwa, Qāsim, Qabīsa b. Dhūʾayb, and Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān."
Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: "Eban b. ʿUthmān had deafness and vitiligo. One year before his death, he suffered a stroke. He died in the year 105 of the Hijra."
According to one opinion, in this year Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī and ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī also died. According to another opinion, Kusayyir ʿAzza is also among the famous figures who died this year. According to a weak narration, Kusayyir died in the year 106 of the Hijra. This will be explained further below.
