He was a Shāfiʿī faqīh (jurist). He is among the imams of the Shāfiʿī madhhab. His real name was Ḥusayn b. Ṣāliḥ b. Ḥayrān. He was a pious and great faqīh. The position of qāḍī (judge) was offered to him, but he did not accept it. Thereupon, the vizier ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā sealed his door for sixteen days. So much so that his family could only obtain drinking water from neighboring houses, because they could not go outside. Nevertheless, he still did not accept the position of qāḍī. The vizier then said: "By doing this, we wanted people to understand that in our country there are those who, although offered the worldly position of qāḍī in the east and west, do not accept this office."
Abū ʿAlī passed away in the month of Dhū al-Ḥijja of this year. We have sufficiently narrated his biography in the work titled Ta-bakāt al-Shāfiʿiyya.

He was a faqīh of Istarābādh. He is among the imams of the Islamic community and memorizers of ḥadīth. His biography is also narrated in the work titled Ta-bakāt al-Shāfiʿiyya.
