He is the shaykh (spiritual leader) of the Muʿtazilites. His full name is Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb Abū ʿAlī al-Jubbāʾī. In his time, he was the shaykh of the Muʿtazila sect. Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī studied under him, but later separated from him. Al-Jubbāʾī authored a very large and voluminous tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis). His tafsir contains unusual interpretations. Imām al-Ashʿarī wrote a refutation against him in this regard and said: "Was the Qur'an revealed as if in the language of the Jubbāʾīs?"
Abū ʿAlī was born in the year 235 AH and died in the year 303 AH.
