He is a famous Hanbalī faqīh (jurist) known by the nickname Gulām. He was one of the leading figures of the Hanbalī madhhab (legal school). He has various works, compilations, and disputations. He heard ḥadīth from Abū'l-Qāsim al-Bāghawī and the ḥadīth scholars of his generation. He died having surpassed eighty years of age. According to Ibn al-Jawzī, he authored the work "al-Muqannāʿ," consisting of 100 juzʾ (parts), and "al-Shāfiʿī," consisting of eighty juzʾ. He traveled with Imam al-Shāfiʿī and opposed him. Additionally, he produced works such as "Kitāb al-Qawlayn," "Mukhtaṣar al-Sunna," as well as other works related to tafsīr (Qur'anic exegesis) and uṣūl (principles of jurisprudence).
