His real name was Aḥmad b. ʿAlī. Abū Bakr is his kunyah. He was a Ḥanafī faqīh (jurist). Rāzī is his nisbah. He was among the aṣḥāb (Companions) of Imam Abū Ḥanīfa. He is the author of the work Kitāb al-Aḥkām al-Qurʾān and other beneficial works. He was a student of Abū'l-Ḥasan al-Karhī. He was an ʿābid (devout worshipper), zahid (ascetic), and a person of taqwā (God-consciousness). In his time, he was the leader of the Ḥanafī madhhab. Students came to him from various regions to study under him. He heard ḥadīth from Abū'l-ʿAbbās al-Asamm and Abū'l-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī. The Caliph Ṭāʾī wanted to appoint him as a qāḍī (judge), but he did not accept this position. He passed away in the month of Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. His funeral prayer was led by Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Mūsā al-Khwarizmī.
