Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā

Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. Muzaffar b. ʿĀlam b. Naʿīm. He was known as the son of Ḥaṣr al-Sulamī. He was a virtuous and learned person. He belonged to the Ḥanbalī madhhab (legal school). Later, he affiliated himself with the Shāfiʿī madhhab. He taught in several madrasas belonging to the Shāfiʿīs in Baghdad. He was a just person and undertook many duties. He was a faqīh (jurist), a specialist in uṣūl (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), and knowledgeable in ʿilm al-kalām (theology). He advanced in the scholarly field in his homeland and attained high ranks. Then Ibn Faḍlān appointed him as the qāḍī (judge) of Dar al-Ḥarīm. Later, he was appointed as a mudarris (professor) at the Nizāmiyya. A mule was sent to him as a gift. During the robe-giving ceremony (hilʿat), the notables and dignitaries were present. He continued his professorship at the Nizāmiyya until he died at the age of eighty that year. Upon his death, he was buried in the Bab al-Ḥarb cemetery.
