He was appointed as judge (qāḍī) of Kufa before al-Shaʿbī. Al-Shaʿbī served as judge of Kufa during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and remained in that position until his death. As for Abū Burda, he was a judge during the time of al-Ḥajjāj. Later, al-Ḥajjāj dismissed him and appointed his brother Abū Bakr in his place. Abū Burda was a jurist (faqīh), a memorizer (ḥāfiẓ), and a scholar (ʿālim). He transmitted a large number of reports (riwāyāt).
