Abū Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Fāris b. Zakariyyā b. Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb. He was a lexicographer. He was from the city of Rāz. He is the author of the work al-Mujmal fī al-Lughah (The Compendium in Language). He resided in Hamadān. He composed beautiful treatises. The author of the work al-Maqāmāt learned the science of literary creativity (badiʿ) from him. One of Abū Ḥusayn's fine poems is as follows:
"A strong warm wind blew towards us. That beloved one is a Turk. The Turk belongs to a Turkish man.
With the tip of his narrow, captivating eye, he looks at us at length.
That eye is stronger than the proof of the grammarian (naḥwī)." This poem also belongs to Abū Ḥusayn:
"If you send someone to fulfill a necessary task that you think you cannot manage,
send a doctor there and do not give him any advice. For, you see, the doctor is the very dirham itself."
Ibn Ḥallikān said: "Abū Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Fāris died in the year 396 AH. There is also a weak report that he died in 395 AH. But the well-known report is the first one."
