There is disagreement regarding whether this individual was among the Companions (ṣaḥāba) or not. Some have said: This person rode a horse during the pre-Islamic period of ignorance and saw Abū Bakr.
Muḥammad b. Saʿd stated: "This individual saw the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), but did not memorize anything from him." Ibn Maʿīn, Bukhārī, and Abū Ḥātim rejected this, saying: "The statement that this person was among the Companions (ṣaḥāba) is not correct." Allah knows best the truth of the matter.
Abū Saʿīd al-Madanī died in the ninety-second year of the Hijra. There is also a weak report that he died in the ninety-first year. Allah knows best the truth.
