He was the brother of Abū Salama b. ʿAbd al-Asad. Their mother was Barra bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. He emigrated to Abyssinia. He participated in the Battle of Badr and the subsequent battles. Zubayr said: "We do not know of anyone who remained in Mecca after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
He himself was residing in Mecca while his family was residing in Badr.
