Abū Tufayl ʿĀmir b. Wāthila b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr al-Laysī al-Kinānī was one of the Companions (ṣaḥāba). He was among the last to see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Regarding this, he himself said: "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as he touched the Black Stone with his staff." After saying this, he described the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) characteristics. He transmitted hadith from Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Muʿādh, and Ibn Masʿūd. Al-Zuhrī, Qatāda, ʿAmr b. Dīnār, Abū al-Zubayr, and a group of the Followers (tābiʿūn) also narrated from him. He was among the supporters of ʿAlī. He participated in all the battles alongside him. However, some people bore enmity towards him because he was with Mukhtār b. Abī ʿUbayd. He had served as Mukhtār’s standard-bearer.
It is narrated that Abū Tufayl went to Muʿāwiya and said to him:
– What has time left you for what you did to ʿAlī? What have you gained?
– It has left me the weeping of the old man who could not work and the old woman who could do nothing. It made him weep; and you, how do you love him?
– I love him as the mother of Mūsā loved Mūsā. If I have any fault, I present my state to Allah. It is related that Abū Tufayl lived to see eight years of the life of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he died in the year 100 of the Hijra (according to another narration, in the year 107). Allah knows best. Muslim b. Ḥajjāj said: "Abū Tufayl was the last of the Companions (ṣaḥāba) to die, and he died in the year 100 of the Hijra."
