The real name of this figure is Saʿīd b. Aws b. Thābit. He was from Basra. He was among the scholars of lexicography. He was a steadfast and trustworthy transmitter. It is reported that he was able to correctly determine the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr).
Abū ʿUthmān al-Māzinī said: I saw al-Aṣmaʿī come to Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī, kiss his head, sit in his presence, and say to him: "You have been our leader and master for fifty years."
Ibn Khallikān said: "Abū Zayd has many works. Some of them are: 'Khalq al-Insān', 'Kitāb al-Ibl', 'Kitāb al-Miyāh', 'Kitāb al-Furs wa al-Tirs.'"
Abū Zayd passed away in this year. There are also reports that he died one year before or one year after this. At the time of his death, he was over ninety years old. It is also said that he was close to one hundred.
