He was among the Qurʾān reciters (qurrāʾ) of Kufa. His real name was ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥabīb. He recited the Noble Qurʾān in the presence of ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ibn Masʿūd. He listened to the Qurʾān from the community of the Companions (ṣaḥāba) and others. In Kufa, he taught the Qurʾān to people from the time of ʿUthmān’s caliphate until the governorship of al-Ḥajjāj. ʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd and others recited the Qurʾān in his presence. He passed away in Kufa.
