Najm al-Dīn Aḥmad b. Shaykh Fahreddīn ʿUthmān b. Abī'l-Qāsim al-Baṣrāwī al-Ḥanafī taught after his uncle, Qāḍī Ṣadrettīn al-Ḥanafī, in Basra. He served as muḥtasib (market inspector) and treasury minister in Dimashq. Later, he was appointed vizier. After a while, he resigned from the vizierate, and his resignation was accepted with the granting of enormous iqṭāʿs (land grants). He was treated with the respect and attire befitting a vizier. Finally, he passed away in Basra on Thursday, the twenty-eighth of Shaʿbān of this year, and was buried there. He was a noble, generous, praiseworthy person who gave much ṣadaqa (charity) and performed many acts of ihsān (benevolence). Upon his death, he left behind a great amount of wealth and children. After him, all of these disappeared. His property was dispersed, his wives were married off by others, and others settled in his houses.
