Faqih (jurisprudence scholar) imam (prayer leader), learned disputant Sharaf al-Din Abu Abdullah Husayn ibn Imam Kamal al-Din Ali ibn Ishaq ibn Salam. He was from Dimashq (Damascus). He belonged to the Shāfiʿī madhhab (legal school). He was born in the year 673 AH. He pursued knowledge and advanced in it. He taught at the al-Jarūdiyya and al-Azrāwiyya madrasas. He served as an assistant (muidlik) at the al-Zāhiriyya Madrasa. He issued fatwas in the court of justice. He was a person of great forbearance, abundant zeal, noble character, fine understanding, excellent comprehension, beautiful handwriting, strong memory, eloquence, and skillful disputation. He passed away on the twenty-fourth of Ramadan of that year. He left behind children and a large amount of debt. His wife, bint Zūwayzan, paid off his debt. May Allah accept her goodness and bestow His bounty upon her as well.
