According to Ibn Ishaq, he later enumerated those among the Jewish scholars who outwardly appeared to be Muslims by way of taqiyya (concealing one's true belief), and stated that these individuals were inwardly disbelievers (kafir). He included them among the class of hypocrites (munāfiqūn), and listed the names of the most wicked among them as follows:
Sa'd b. Hunayf, Zayd b. Lusait. This man, when the Messenger of God’s camel was lost, said:
– Muhammad claims that news comes to him from the heavens, yet he does not know where his own camel is!
The Messenger of God then said:
– By Allah, I know nothing except what Allah has taught me. But Allah, the Exalted, has informed me where my camel is. My camel is at such-and-such a place right now. Its halter got caught on a tree, so it is standing there.
Upon this, a few Muslims went and found the camel at the place the Prophet had indicated.
Ibn Ishaq continues to list the names of the Jewish scholars who entered Islam by way of taqiyya:
Nuʿmān b. Awfā, ʿUthmān b. Awfā, Rāfiʿ b. Huraimila. This is the one about whom the Messenger of God said:
“Today, a great one among the leaders of the hypocrites has died!”
Ibn Ishaq says that Rufāʿa b. Zayd b. Tābūt was also among the Jewish scholars who entered Islam by way of taqiyya. On the day he died, the Messenger of God was returning from Tabuk. He saw that a strong wind was blowing and said:
“This wind is blowing because a great one among the leaders of the disbelievers (kafir) has died.” When the Muslims arrived in Medina, they learned that Rufāʿa had died on the day the wind had blown fiercely.
Ibn Ishaq also says that Silsila b. Burham and Kināna b. Suriyya were among the Jewish scholars who entered Islam by way of taqiyya.
The above-named Jewish hypocrites had entered Islam by way of taqiyya.
Ibn Ishaq said: These hypocrites would come to the mosque, listen to the conversations of the Muslims, mock them, and ridicule their religion.
One day, a group of them gathered together in the mosque. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that they were whispering among themselves, almost clinging to one another. Thereupon, the Messenger of God ordered that they be expelled from the mosque. Those expelled from the mosque were: Abu Ayyub (who is Khalid b. Zayd), who turned to ʿAmr b. Qays (who was from the Banu Ghanm b. Malik b. Najjar tribe and, in the pre-Islamic period, was the keeper of this tribe’s idols), grabbed him by the foot, and dragged him out of the mosque. As he was being expelled, he said:
– O Abu Ayyub! Are you expelling and banishing me from the date-drying place of the sons of Saʿlaba?!
Abu Ayyub then turned to Rāfiʿ b. Wadiya from the sons of Najjar. He grabbed him by the neck with his cloak, then dragged him out forcefully and struck him on the face. Then he expelled him from the mosque. As he was expelling him, Abu Ayyub said to him:
– O vile hypocrite, woe to you! O hypocrite, leave the mosque of the Messenger of God and return to where you came from!
ʿAmmāra b. Hazm stood up and walked towards Zayd b. ʿAmr. This was a man with a long beard. He grabbed him by the beard, pulled him out forcefully, and expelled him from the mosque. Then ʿAmmāra clasped his hands together and struck him hard on the chest, causing him to fall to the ground. He said:
– O ʿAmmāra! You have hurt me. ʿAmmāra replied to him:
– O hypocrite! May Allah distance you from His mercy. The punishment Allah has prepared for you is more severe than this. Do not approach the mosque of the Messenger of God from now on!
Abu Muhammad Masʿūd b. Aws b. Zayd b. Asram b. Zayd b. Saʿlaba b. Ghanm b. Malik b. Najjar (who participated in the Battle of Badr) stood up and turned to Qays b. ʿAmr b. Sahl. ʿAmr was a young man. Among the hypocrites, there was no other young man besides him. Abu Muhammad dragged him out of the mosque by his head.
A man from the Banu Hudra tribe turned to a hypocrite named Harith b. ʿAmr, who had a forelock. He grabbed him by the forelock and dragged him out of the mosque forcefully. As he was being expelled, the hypocrite said to him:
– O Abu Harith, you have truly behaved very harshly! Abu Harith replied to him:
– You deserve this, O enemy of Allah! For a verse (āya) has been revealed concerning you. Do not approach the mosque of the Messenger of God anymore. For you are a vile man.
A man from the Banu ʿAmr b. ʿAwf tribe turned to his brother named Zuwai b. Harith. He also dragged him out of the mosque forcefully and became very angry with him. Then he said:
– Satan and his rule have prevailed over you.
After this, Ibn Ishaq narrated the verses (āyāt) from al-Baqara and al-Tawba that were revealed concerning these hypocrites. He discussed their tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) beautifully. May Allah have mercy on him.
