The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent ahead a group from his family during the night, before the people surged from Muzdalifah to Mina.
Bukhari, in the chapter "Those who sent the weak members of their family ahead during the night, and their standing and supplicating at Muzdalifah, and their departure when the moon had set," narrates from Salim as follows:
"ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar would send the weak and frail members of his family ahead to Muzdalifah. They would perform the standing (wuqūf) at al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām during the night and remember Allah as best they knew. Then, before they themselves performed the standing and set out, these family members would depart. Some of them would reach Mina at the time of the dawn prayer and perform the dawn prayer there, while others would arrive later. Upon arrival, they would stone the jamarāt. Ibn ʿUmar said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) granted a dispensation for this."
Sulaymān b. Ḥarb narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās as follows:
"The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me from Muzdalifah to Mina during the night."
Bukhari narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās as follows:
"I was among those whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent ahead from Muzdalifah during the night, along with the weak and frail members of his own family."
Muslim narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās as follows:
"The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me from Muzdalifah at dawn, along with our burdens."
Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās as follows:
"The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us, the children of the sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, ahead on our mounts, and, striking our legs with the palm of his hand, said: 'O my children! Do not stone the jamarāt before the sun rises.' I do not think any of us stoned the jamra before sunrise."
Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās as follows:
"The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent the weak and frail members of his family ahead from Muzdalifah during the night. He began to advise them not to stone Jamrat al-ʿAqaba before sunrise."
Abū Dāwūd, through ʿUthmān b. Abī Shayba, narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās as follows:
"The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent the weak and frail members of his family ahead during the last darkness of the night. He commanded them not to stone the jamra before sunrise."
Bukhari, through the route of Musaddad, narrates from ʿAbdullāh b. Kaysān as follows:
"Lady Asmāʾ, on the night when the evening and night prayers were combined, arrived at Muzdalifah, spent the night there, and performed prayers. After praying for a while, Asmāʾ asked:
- My son, has the moon set? Abdullah replied:
- No, it has not set, he answered. After praying a while longer, she asked again:
- My son, has the moon set? Abdullah replied:
- Yes, it has set, he answered. Asmāʾ then said:
- Then set out for Mina. They set out, and when they reached the place of the jamra, they stoned it. After stoning the jamra, Asmāʾ returned to her place and performed the dawn prayer. Abdullah said to her:
- Mother, I think we stoned the jamra before daybreak. Asmāʾ replied:
- My son, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted this for women." Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq stoned the jamra before sunrise. As mentioned in the above narration, this was the case. However, children are quicker and more agile than women. For this reason, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that children should not stone the jamra before sunrise, but granted a dispensation for women in this matter. He permitted women to stone the jamra before sunrise, because they move more slowly, and this also helps them to cover themselves more comfortably in the darkness. Allah knows best.
In another narration, Asmāʾ said: "We used to do this during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Bukhari, through Abū Nuʿaym, narrates from Lady ʿĀʾisha as follows:
"During the Farewell Pilgrimage, we arrived at Muzdalifah. Sawda bint Zamʿa asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to be sent to Mina before the crowd. Sawda was a large, slow-moving woman. The Messenger of God granted her permission and sent her to Mina before the crowd. We remained with the Messenger of God until morning. Then the Messenger of God sent us to Mina as he had sent Sawda. I wish I had asked the Messenger of God for permission as Sawda did. Asking the Messenger of God for permission is dearer to me than possessing the world."
Abū Dāwūd, through Hārūn b. ʿAbdullāh, narrates from Lady ʿĀʾisha as follows:
"On the night of the Feast of Sacrifice, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Umm Salama from Muzdalifah to Mina. She stoned the jamra before dawn, then went on her way. That day, the Messenger of God was with her."
