Hadith Master Ibn Tabarzed

His real name was ʿUmar b. Muḥammad b. Muʿammar b. Yaḥyā. He was known as Abū Ḥafṣ b. Tabarzed al-Baghdādī al-Darrakezzī. He was born in the year 515 of the Hijra. He listened to and transmitted many hadiths. He was a witty and refined person. He taught and educated children at Dār al-Qaz. Together with Ḥanbal b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Mukabbir, he came to Damascus. The people of Damascus listened to hadiths from both of them. Both of them acquired a great deal of wealth and property and returned to Baghdad. Ḥanbal died in the year 603 of the Hijra, and Ibn Tabarzed lived until this year. He died on the ninth of the month of Rajab in this year. At his death, he was ninety-seven years old. He left behind a large fortune. His inheritance remained only to the Bayt al-māl (public treasury). He was buried in the Bāb al-Ḥarb cemetery.
