Hafiz Abu'l-Fath Muhammad b. Hasan b. Ahmad b. Husayn al-Azdī. He was from Mosul. He compiled a work related to jarḥ and taʿdīl (criticism and accreditation of hadith transmitters). He narrated from Abu Yaʿlā and from hadith scholars of his generation. Most of the hadith memorisers (ḥuffāẓ) of his time stated that he was a weak transmitter. Some, however, said that when he came to Baghdad, he fabricated hadith by claiming to have narrated from Ibn Buwayh. He transmitted this hadith with its chain to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "Jibril (peace be upon him) would come to our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the guise of this amir (Ibn Buwayh)." Because he fabricated this hadith, Ibn Buwayh gave him many gifts and a large number of dirhams.
The astonishing situation is this: if this hadith were truly stated as authentic, how could even those with the least amount of intellect and understanding have accepted it?! Ibn al-Jawzī stated that he died in this year. There is also a weak report that he died in the year 369 of the Hijra.
