His kunyah (teknonym) is Abū'l-Walīd. He is from the Quraysh. He belonged to the Shāfiʿī madhhab (legal school). In his time, he was the imam of the people of ḥadīth in Khurāsān. He was the most ascetic and the most diligent among them. He learned the science of fiqh from Ibn Suraij. He also learned ḥadīth from Ḥasan b. Sufyān and others. He has beneficial works. We have narrated his biography in the work titled Ṭabaqāt al-Shāfiʿiyya. He passed away at the age of seventy-two on the fifth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, on a Friday night of this year.
