Husayn, the son of ʿAlī, was advancing on the road to Kufa, traveling with his companions and relatives between Mecca and Iraq, when the sixty-first year began. According to the narration accepted as accurate by Wāqidī and several other renowned historians, he was killed on the tenth day of the month of Muḥarram of this year. According to the claim of some, however, he was killed in the month of Ṣafar of this year. Yet, the narration transmitted regarding his being killed on the tenth of Muḥarram is more authentic.
