In this year, after five years of warfare, ʿAbdullāh b. Ṭāhir besieged Naṣr b. Shabath. He put him in a truly difficult situation. Eventually, Naṣr also submitted and sought amān (safe-conduct) from ʿAbdullāh. ʿAbdullāh informed Maʾmūn of this situation by letter. In his reply, Maʾmūn stated that he had granted amān to Naṣr b. Shabath. Upon this command of Maʾmūn, ʿAbdullāh wrote a letter of amān to him. ʿAbdullāh also ordered his soldiers to protect the city he had taken under his protection from destruction. Thus, the danger posed by ʿAbdullāh was eliminated.
In this year, battles took place with Bābak al-Khurramī. Bābak captured one of the Muslim commanders who was at the head of the vanguard troops. This event greatly distressed the Muslims.
In this year, Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās, the governor of Mecca, led the people in the ḥajj.
In this year, the Byzantine emperor Michael b. Nikephoros died. Michael had ruled as emperor for thirty years. After his death, the Byzantines made his son Tofil b. Michael their emperor.
In this year, among the masters of ḥadīth, Ḥasan b. Mūsā al-Ashyab, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥanafī, the judge of Nishapur Ḥafṣ b. ʿAbdullāh, ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar b. Fāris, and Yaʿlā b. ʿUbayd al-Tanafusī passed away.
