Malik Mujāhid Asadüddīn Shīrkūh b. Nāṣirüddīn Muḥammad b. Asadüddīn Shīrkūh b. Ṣadī. In the year 581 AH, following the death of his father, Malik al-Nāṣir Ṣalāḥaddīn al-Ayyūbī appointed him as the governor of Ḥimṣ (Humus). He remained in this position for fifty-seven years. His life and administration were among the finest of rulers. He purified his country from intoxicants, unjust taxes, and indecencies. There was perfect justice and security in his land. No one from the Crusaders or Arabs dared to enter his territory. If they did attempt to enter, he would humiliate them severely and bring them to ruin. The Ayyūbid rulers themselves feared him because they considered him more worthy of governance than themselves. His grandfather had conquered Egypt and was the first among the Ayyūbids to rule Egypt. He passed away this year in Ḥimṣ. May Allah have mercy on him. His funeral prayer was held at the Mosque of Damascus. May Allah forgive him by His grace and generosity.
