Husayn b. ʿAlī

Husayn b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Jāfir Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Saymarī's nisba (attribution) comes from the Saymar River in Basra. Along the banks of that river are many villages and towns. Husayn b. ʿAlī was among the Hanafī imams. He was first appointed as the qāḍī (judge) of Madāʾin, then as the qāḍī of Ribūʿ al-Karh. He heard ḥadīth from Abū Bakr al-Mufīd, Ibn Shāhin, and others. He was a truthful speaker, sharp-witted, fully sane, easygoing, devoted in worship, and knowledgeable of the rights of the ʿulamāʾ. He passed away at the age of eighty-five in the month of Shawwāl of this year.
