Ibn Sabʿīn ʿAbd al-Ḥak B. Ibrāhīm

His lineage is as follows. ʿAbd al-Ḥak b. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Naṣr b. Muḥammad b. Naṣr b. Muḥammad b. Quṭb al-Dīn Abū Muḥammad al-Maqdisī al-Rāqutī. The term Rāqutī indicates that he was from Rāquta. Rāquta is a town near Marsiya. Ibn Sabʿīn was born in the year 614 AH. He engaged in philosophy, logic, and the science of the ancients (ʿilm al-awāʾil). Because of this, a kind of irreligion (dinsizlik) appeared in him. He authored works on this subject. He knew the science of alchemy. By means of this knowledge, he deceived some simple-minded emirs and wealthy people, misleading their intellects. He said that this was a condition arising from the states of the community. He has works such as Kitāb al-Badw and Riṭāb al-Ḥaw. He resided in Mecca. He misled the emir of Mecca, Ibn Sammī. Sometimes he would go to the Ḥīrā cave and stay there, and since he believed that prophethood was attained through effort and that prophethood was a spiritual effusion (fayḍ) that becomes purified and clarified in the intellect, he hoped that revelation would come to him as it did to the Prophet (s.a.v.) in the Ḥīrā cave. However, at the end of this waiting, if he died upon this belief, he attained only disgrace and ignominy in this world and the Hereafter. When he saw those circumambulating the Kaʿba al-Muʿaẓẓama, he would say, "They are like donkeys going around a millstone. If only they circumambulated me, it would be better than their circumambulation of the House." Allah will give His due judgment upon him and those like him. Some words and actions smelling of kufr (disbelief) have been transmitted from him. He died in Mecca al-Mukarrama on the twenty-eighth of Shawwāl of that year.
