Kāḍī al-quḍāt Shams al-Dīn Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdillāh b. Shaykh Sharaf al-Dīn Muḥammad b. ʿAṭāʾ b. Ḥasan b. ʿAṭāʾ Jubayr b. Jābir b. Wuhayb al-Ezraʿī al-Hanafī. He was born in the year 595 AH. He studied ḥadīth. He learned fiqh of the Abū Ḥanīfa madhhab. For a time, he served as deputy judge for the Shāfiʿīs. Then, at the first appointment where judges were assigned according to the four madhāhib, he was appointed as the principal judge of the Hanafīs. When people’s properties were confiscated, the sultan asked him to issue a ruling that this was in accordance with the Ḥanafī madhhab. He became angry and said, “These are properties in the hands of their owners. It is not permissible for any Muslim to touch them.” Then he left the sultan’s council. The sultan was very angry at his action, but later his anger subsided. He both praised and commended him, then said, “Do not accept any writings other than his.”
Ibn ʿAṭāʾ was one of the distinguished scholars and very humble. He had little attachment to the world. Ibn Jamāʿa narrated ḥadīth from him. He himself granted ijāza to Barzalīyah. He died on Friday, the ninth of Jumādā al-Awwal of that year. He was buried near Muʿaẓẓamīyah in the Qāsyūn cemetery. May Almighty Allah have mercy on him.
