He used to say: When we attended a funeral ceremony or heard that someone had died, this ḥāl (spiritual state) would be apparent among us for days. For we knew that the deceased had encountered a situation that would lead to being sent either to Paradise or to Hell, but you discuss worldly matters at your funerals.
Ibrāhīm b. Yazīd also said: "A person's opinion is not confirmed nor upright without seeing, and seeing is only achieved through insight."
If you see that a person does not give importance to the opening takbīr (iftitāḥ takbīr) in prayer, lose hope for his salvation.
When I see something blameworthy, I reproach it because I fear being afflicted by it myself."
When Ibrāhīm was about to die, he wept. When he was asked: "Why are you crying?" he replied: "I am awaiting the Angel of Death; I do not know whether he will bring me glad tidings of Paradise or of the Fire of Hell."
