Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq b. Ismāʿīl b. Ḥammād b. Zayd Abū Isḥāq al-Azdī. He was a qāḍī (judge). He was from Basra, but grew up in Baghdad. He studied with Muslim b. Ibrāhīm,
Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, Kaʿnabī, and also took lessons from ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī. He was a ḥāfiẓ (memorizer of hadith) and a faqīh (jurist), and belonged to the Mālikī madhhab (school of law). He compiled and classified works. He also wrote commentaries on many works related to tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), hadith, fiqh (jurisprudence), and other sciences.
During the caliphate of al-Mutawakkil, after Suwār b. ʿAbd Allāh, he was appointed to the position of qāḍī. Later, he was dismissed. After some time, he was reinstated as qāḍī and became the leader of the judges. He passed away suddenly on a Wednesday night, eight days before the end of the month of Dhū al-Ḥijja of this year. He was over eighty years old. May Allah have mercy on him.
Among the notable figures who died this year were also the famous owner of the "Musnad," Ḥārith b. Muḥammad b. Abī Usāma, and Ḥumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn.
