Ismāʿīl b. Nūceyd b. Aḥmad b. Yūsuf Abū ʿAmr al-Sulamī.
He was a companion of Junaid al-Baghdādī and others. He transmitted ḥadīth and was a trustworthy (sīka) narrator. One of his beautiful sayings is: "Whoever you see does not guide you to the right path is not a person of good character and virtue."
His shaykh Abū ʿUthmān once fell into need. He asked his friends to help him. But Ibn Nūceyd brought him a purse containing 1,000 dirhams. Shaykh Abū ʿUthmān took the purse and thanked the friends around him. Ibn Nūceyd said to his shaykh: "O my master; this money was my mother's. Although her heart was not content, I took this money from her and brought it to you. Now I want you to return this money to me so that I may take it back to my mother." Abū ʿUthmān returned the money to Ibn Nūceyd. But at night he brought the money back to Shaykh Abū ʿUthmān and said: "I want you to spend this money to meet your own needs and not to mention it to anyone."
Abū ʿUthmān used to say: "I am harvesting the fruits of the tree of effort of Abū ʿAmr b. Nūceyd." May Almighty Allah have mercy on them all.
