Yusuf listened to hadith from Ṣirri b. Yaḥyā and Yunus b. Abī Isḥāq. He studied raʾy (independent legal reasoning) in depth and learned fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). During the lifetime of his father, Abu Yusuf, he was appointed as qadi (judge) on the eastern side of Baghdad. By the order of Harun al-Rashid, he led the people in Friday prayer at the Mansur Mosque. While serving as the qadi of Baghdad, he passed away in the month of Rajab of that year.
