He is the author of the work al-Ḥāwī al-Kabīr. His real name is ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Ḥabīb Abū'l-Ḥasan al-Māwardī. He is from Basra. He is a Shāfiʿī scholar. He authored many classified works on uṣūl (principles), furūʿ (branches), and tafsīr (Qur'anic exegesis), as well as the books Aḥkām al-Sulṭāniyya and Adab al-Dunyā wa'd-Dīn. He himself said, "I have explained fiqh extensively in 4,000 leaves." That is, he meant that in his work al-ʾIqnāʿ he explained fiqh in detail. He served as a judge in many cities. He was a gentle, dignified, and well-mannered person. Because he was modest and chaste, none of his friends ever saw his sleeve rolled up throughout his life.
