Mūsā b. Yūnus b. Muḥammad b. Menʾa, b. Mālik al-ʿUkaylī Abū'l-Fatḥ al-Mūsilī. He was the shaykh of the Shāfiʿīs in Mosul. He taught in several madrasas there. He possessed knowledge of uṣūl (principles), maʿqūlāt (rational sciences), logic, and philosophy. Students from various regions came to study with him. He lived eighty-five years. He composed beautiful poetry. In a poem praising the governor of Mosul, Badr al-Dīn Luʾluʾ, he said:
“If you have adorned the world with your power in your governance, then the land called the world has surely been honored thanks to you.
May your command and judgment prevail throughout time. May your effort be met with gratitude. And may your judgment be just.”
Kemal b. Yūnus was born in the year 551 AH and passed away in the middle of the month of Shaʿbān of that year. May Almighty Allah have mercy on him.
