The lineage of our esteemed shaykh, who lived a long life and traveled to various lands in pursuit of knowledge, is as follows: Bahaeddin b. Shaykh Beireddin Abū Ghālib Muzaffar b. Nizam al-Dīn b. Ibn al-Sanfi Mahmud b. Imam Tājuddīn. Abū'l-Faḍl Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Usāghān b. Hibatullāh b. Abdullah b. Husayn b. Dimashqī was among the physicians who lived long lives. He was born in the year 629 of the Hijra. He gathered a great number of hadiths, both by listening directly to the hadith scholars and by other means. Hafiz ʿAlam al-Dīn al-Birmilī, upon his death, mentioned the names of his hadith teachers. Likewise, Hafiz Salah al-Dīn al-ʿAlāʾī compiled his hadiths with high chains of transmission in a book. The hadith scholar Nāṣir al-Dīn b. Ṭughurbak collected information about his hadith teachers in a seven-volume work, in which 570 hadith shaykhs are mentioned. I read this book to him, and he listened. At that time, other hadith scholars also listened.
Berzalī said: "If we remove the repetitions, I read to him a book about hadith shaykhs in twenty-three volumes. In addition, I read to him a hadith book of 550 juzʾ (juzʾ: a thirtieth of the Qur'an), including the repeated ones."
Our shaykh Bahaeddin also engaged in medicine. He treated people free of charge. He had memorized many hadiths, stories, and poems. He also composed poetry. He was skilled in writing various styles. Later, he abandoned all these and secluded himself in his home, devoting himself to transmitting hadith. In the latter part of his life, he accomplished many things alone. He narrated solitary transmissions. He made the transmission of hadith very easy. He dedicated his house as a Dār al-Ḥadīth (house of hadith). He bestowed favors upon Hafiz Berzalī and Mizzī. He passed away this year, on Monday, the twenty-fifth of Shaʿbān, at noon. He was buried in the Qasyūn Cemetery. May Allah have mercy on him.
