Lexicographer Shams al-Dīn b. Sāʾiġ

Shaykh Shams al-Dīn b. Sāʾiġ Abū ʿAbdillāh Muḥammad b. Ḥusayn b. Sibāʾ b. Abī Bakr al-Juzāmī. Originally Egyptian, he later migrated to Dimashq (Damascus). He was born in Egypt around the year 645 AH. He studied ḥadīth. He was a man of letters, virtuous, and a scholar of advanced rank in prosody and poetry. He also attained advanced levels in ʿarūḍ (the science of Arabic prosody), balāgha (rhetoric), naḥw (grammar), and lughah (lexicography). He abridged al-Jawharī's Ṣiḥāḥ and commented on Ibn Durayd's al-Maqṣūrah. He composed the Qaṣīda al-Ṭāʾiyya, which exceeds 2,000 couplets. In this qaṣīda, he discussed various sciences and arts. He was of good character, and his conversations and lectures were pleasant. He lived in a house between Darb al-Ḥabbālīn and Farrāsh in Būstān al-Qaṭṭ. He died on Monday, the third of Shaʿbān of that year, and was buried in the Bāb al-Ṣaghīr Cemetery.
