His nephew, Sultan Ṣalāḥuddīn, who was the son of his sister, granted him the city of Ḥamā as an iqṭāʿ (land grant). While he was ill, the Crusaders besieged him. They captured Ḥamā. They killed some of the people. Then the people of Ḥamā rallied with zeal and engaged in battle, retaking Ḥamā and driving the Crusaders back in a disordered state.
