Maymūna bint al-Ḥārith

In this year, the Mother of the Believers, Maymūna bint al-Ḥārith al-Hilālī, also passed away. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) married her during the seventh year of the Hijra, at the time of the ʿUmrat al-Qaḍāʾ. According to the statement of Ibn ʿAbbās, who was the son of Maymūna's sister Umm al-Faḍl Lubāba bint al-Ḥārith, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) married Maymūna while he was in a state of iḥrām (ritual consecration). However, according to an authentic narration in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, it is reported that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and Maymūna were not in iḥrām when they married. According to the narration of al-Tirmidhī, Abū Rāfiʿ—the person who acted as an intermediary between the Messenger of God and Maymūna—stated that they were not in iḥrām when they married. Maymūna's original name was Barrah, but the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the name Maymūna. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) consummated the marriage with her at Sharif, a place between Mecca and Medina. Again, Maymūna passed away in the fifty-second year of the Hijra at the same place. Although there are reports that she died in the fifty-third or fifty-sixth year, according to the most well-known narration, she died in the fifty-first year. Upon her death, her funeral prayer was led by her nephew, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās. May Allah be pleased with them.
