On the second of Dhu al-Qi'dah of this year, the Fatimid caliph, Āmir b. Aḥkāmillāh b. Musta‘lī, was killed by a batīnī (esoteric sect member). He was thirty-four years old at the time of his assassination. He had held the caliphate for twenty-nine years and five and a half months. He was the tenth son of ʿUbaydullāh al-Mahdī. Upon his death, an Armenian slave gained control over the land of Egypt. He ruled Egypt for three days. Finally, Abū ʿAlī Aḥmad b. Ifḍāl b. Badīr al-Jamalī arrived and installed Ḥāfiẓ Abū Maymūn ʿAbd al-Majīd b. Amīr Abū'l-Qāsim al-Mustanṣir as caliph. At that time, Ḥāfiẓ Abū Maymūn al-Mustanṣir was fifty-eight years old. When he assumed the caliphate, Abū ʿAlī Aḥmad kept him under close watch in his position. He took control of the administration himself. He did not allow anyone he disliked near him. He transferred the wealth and money from the palace to his own house. Ḥāfiẓ Abū Maymūn al-Mustanṣir had only the name of the caliphate.
