The genealogy of this person is as follows: Muʿāwiya b. Jafna b. Ḥadīc b. Jafna b. Katīra al-Rindī al-Ḥolānī al-Miṣrī. According to the opinion of many, this individual is among the Companions (ṣaḥāba). Ibn Ḥibbān, however, stated that he belonged to the generation of the Successors (tābiʿūn). He is among the trustworthy transmitters. Yet, the first opinion is sound, that is, he is a Companion (ṣaḥāba). He participated in the conquest of Egypt. He came to ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) for the conquest of Alexandria. He fought alongside ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ against the Berbers. In that battle, he lost his eye. He took part in many battles in the Maghrib lands and served as a commander. During the caliphate of ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), he supported ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) in Egypt. He never pledged allegiance to ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him). When Muʿāwiya b. Abī Sufyān took control of Egypt, he honored him and, after ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, appointed him as governor of Egypt. ʿAbdullāh, after his father ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, governed Egypt for two years, then Muʿāwiya removed him from office and appointed this person, that is, Muʿāwiya b. Ḥadīc, in his place. Muʿāwiya remained in Egypt until his death in that same year.
