Muhammad b. Saʿdān Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī. He listened to hadith from more than 500 hadith scholars, but himself transmitted only a small number of hadith. He passed away in the month of Shaʿbān of this year.
According to what Ibn al-Jawzī stated, there are two individuals named Muhammad b. Saʿdān: one is Muhammad b. Saʿdān al-Bazzār, who is not well-known. The other is the grammarian Muhammad b. Saʿdān, and this person is well-known. He died in the year 201 of the Hijra.
In his work entitled al-Kāmil, Ibn al-Athīr said:
"Among them, Yaʿqūb b. Sufyān b. Ḥarrān, known as Imām Fasawee, Yaʿqūb b. Yūsuf b. Maʿkū, a freedman of the Mawālī, also died in this year.
This person is the father of Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. al-Aṣamm. Also in this year, Arīb, who sang songs in the assembly of Maʾmūn, passed away. According to one narration, the aforementioned Arīb is the daughter of Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā al-Barmakī."
