His kunyah (teknonym) was Abū Jaʿfar al-Varrāq. He heard many ḥadīth. He possessed a sound intellect and memory. He was a sīka (trustworthy) and a zahid (ascetic) person. However, he gave only the money he earned by his own labor. He never abandoned the night prayer. One of his friends said: "I was friends with him for many years; I never saw him do anything other than what would please Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. He would not speak without being asked a question. He spent most of the night in prayer."
