Muḥammad b. ʿUbaydallāh b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ʿArūs Abū'l-Dafīʿ was among the scholars to whom the leadership of the Maliki fuqahāʾ (jurists) in Baghdad was entrusted. He was a ḥadīth scholar who possessed a musnad (a collection of ḥadīth arranged by narrator). He heard ḥadīth from Ibn Ḥabāna, Muḥlis, and Ibn Shāhin. Abū ʿAbdallāh al-Dāmighānī accepted his testimony. Muḥammad b. ʿUbaydallāh was among the experts in jarḥ wa taʿdīl (criticism and accreditation of ḥadīth transmitters).
