His kunyah (teknonym) is Abū ʿImrān. His father was famously known by the nickname Ḥammāl. He was born in the year 214 AH. He heard ḥadīth from Imām Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, and others. He was the imām of his era in memorizing ḥadīth and in recognizing the narrators of ḥadīth (rijāl). He was extremely God-conscious (taqwā), awe-inspiring, and a trustworthy (ṣiqah) narrator who transmitted with a sound isnād (chain of transmission). The Egyptian Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī b. Saʿīd said about him: "Among people in the field of ḥadīth, the most excellent and praiseworthy speakers are ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, then Mūsā b. Hārūn, and then al-Dāraquṭnī."
