After the twentieth of the month of Ramaḍān, the deputy of Gaza sent a message by post to the deputy of Damascus, reporting that Sultan Malik Muzaffer Ḥājj b. Nasir Muḥammad had been killed, that a dispute had arisen between him and the emirs, that the emirs had left him alone in the Qubbat al-Nāṣir, and that he had advanced upon them with a small retinue but was immediately killed, and that his body was dragged and buried in a cemetery there. According to another report, his body was torn to pieces. Innā lillāh wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn (Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return).
On Friday evening, a commander arrived from the land of Miṣr to Damascus. This person was to receive the bayʿah (pledge of allegiance) on behalf of his brother Sultan Nāṣir Ḥasan b. Sultan Nāṣir Muḥammad b. Qalāwūn. Due to his arrival, drums of joy were played at the fortress of Manṣūra. The entire city was decorated. At that time, those who had the opportunity immediately adorned their homes. Praise and thanks be to Allah. But when Saturday morning came, the whole city was completely decorated; praise be to Allah for the establishment of concord, intimacy, and unity.
On the day of the full moon of the month of Shawwāl, the deputy of Ḥalab, Emir Fahreddīn Iyās, arrived in Damascus under arrest. He met with the deputy of sovereignty at Dār al-Saʿāda. Afterwards, he was humiliated, pushed and shoved, and imprisoned in the fortress. According to the report, he entrusted his situation to the deputy of Damascus, who stated that whatever he deemed appropriate regarding him, he would accept. He stayed about a week in the fortress of Manṣūra. Then he was sent by post to the land of Miṣr. What happened to him thereafter is unknown.
On the night of the third of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Monday night, the great ḥāfiẓ of ḥadīth, the sheikh of the Islamic historians and muhaddithīn, Shams al-Dīn Abū ʿAbdallāh Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān al-Zahabī, passed away at the tomb of Umm Ṣāliḥ. On Monday, after the noon prayer, the funeral prayer was performed at the Mosque of Damascus and he was buried in the Cemetery of Bāb al-Ṣaghīr. With his passing, the era of the sheikhs and ḥuffāẓ of ḥadīth came to an end. May Allah have mercy on him.
On the sixteenth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Sunday, at the tomb of Umm Ṣāliḥ, a lesson was given in place of Shaykh Shams al-Dīn al-Zahabī. May Allah have mercy on the one who endowed this tomb. Leading jurists and some judges were also present at the lesson. Indeed, there was a large audience. Praise and thanks be to Allah. In this lesson, the following ḥadīth was discussed, which Imam Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal narrated from al-Shāfiʿī, Mālik, Zuhri, ʿAbdurraḥmān b. Kaʿb b. Mālik, and ʿAbdurraḥmān's father Kaʿb Ṭarīqī from the Messenger of Allah (ṣallā llāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam): "The soul of the believer is a bird placed on the tree of Paradise. It waits on that tree until the Day of Resurrection, and on that day it enters the resurrected body."
On the nineteenth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Wednesday, the deputy of sovereignty ordered the cutting off of the hands of a group of people who were looting goods from the courtyards of houses. The hands of eleven of them were cut off. Ten others were nailed, whipped, and severely beaten as a form of discipline. Allah Almighty knows best.
