The real name of this person is Ṣāliḥ b. Isḥāq. He was from Basra. He came to Baghdad and engaged in debate there with al-Farrāʾ. He learned the science of grammar (nahw) from Abū ʿUbayda, Abū Zayd, and al-Aṣmaʿī. He compiled many books on this subject. One of his books is "Farḥ." He was a jurist (faqīh) and a virtuous scholar of grammar. He possessed a brilliant intellect. He knew lexicography and preserved the science of lexicon. He was devout, possessed taqwa (God-consciousness), had good character, and held sound beliefs. He narrated hadith. Ibn Khallikān spoke of him in this manner. Al-Mubarrad also narrated hadith from him. Abū Muʿaym described him as well in his work "Tārīkh-i Iṣfahān."
