The genealogy of this person is as follows: ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥa b. Abī Ṭalḥa b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd al-Dār al-ʿAbdarī al-Ḥujbī. ʿUthmān embraced Islam at the beginning of the eighth year of the Hijra, before the conquest of Mecca, together with Khālid b. al-Walīd and ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ. Al-Wāqidī transmitted from him a lengthy hadith regarding his story of entering Islam. During the conquest of Mecca, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) took the key of the Kaʿba from this person. Then, after reciting the following verse (āya), he returned the key to him: "Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due." (al-Nisāʾ 4:58)
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), upon reciting this verse and handing the key back to him, said: "O ʿUthmān, as this key has remained with you from before, now take it so that it will remain with you forever. Let no one take it from your hand except a wrongdoer." ʿAlī requested the key of the Kaʿba from the Messenger of God, but the Messenger of God did not give it to him.
Al-Wāqidī said: ʿUthmān came and settled in Medina during the lifetime of the Messenger of God. After the Messenger of God passed away, he went and settled in Mecca. He continued to reside in Mecca until he died in the early period of Muʿāwiya's caliphate.
