The genealogy of this individual is as follows: Ṣafwān b. Umayya b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfa b. Wahb al-Qurashī. He was among the leaders. As mentioned in the previous section, in the year of the conquest of Mecca, this person fled from the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), but later came and embraced Islam, living his Islam beautifully. The person who secured protection (amān) for him was ʿUmayr b. Wahb al-Jumaḥī. ʿUmayr had been his friend and companion during the pre-Islamic (jāhiliyya) period. This was also explained on previous pages. ʿUmayr brought Ṣafwān at the time of the afternoon prayer (ʿaṣr), requested protection for him, and the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him amān for four months. He (the Prophet) had also received, as a trust from him, armors, weapons, and a certain amount of property. Ṣafwān, while still a polytheist (mushrik), participated in the Battle of Ḥunayn, but later became Muslim and faith (iman) entered his heart. Just as he was one of the leaders in the period of ignorance (jāhiliyya), he also became one of the leaders of the Muslims in the Islamic period. According to the account of al-Wāqidī, after becoming Muslim, he continued to reside in Mecca, and finally passed away there in the early period of Muʿāwiya's caliphate.
