His name was Abū Saʿīd ʿAbd al-Salām b. Saʿīd b. Jundab b. Ḥassan b. Hilāl b. Bakkār b. Rabīʿa al-Tanūhī, and he is the author of the work titled "al-Mudawwana." His origin is from the city of Ḥimṣ. His father took him to the land of the Maghrib together with his soldiers. He resided there. In the land of the Maghrib, the leadership of the Mālikī school passed into his hands. He learned jurisprudence (fiqh) from ʿAlī b. al-Qāsim. The story is as follows: Asad b. al-Furāt, a companion of Imām Mālik, came from the Arab lands to the country of Egypt. There, he found ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim and asked him many questions. He answered these questions. Asad memorized these answers and went to the land of the Maghrib; Sahnūn then received these answers from him and copied them. Afterwards, he went to Egypt, to Ibn al-Qāsim. He asked him some questions again, adding new ones to his previous questions. He did not repeat some of his old questions. He returned with new information. Sahnūn also recorded these in an organized manner. He returned to the land of the Maghrib. Together with him, Ibn al-Qāsim wrote a letter to Asad b. al-Furāt, asking him to compare his copy with that of Sahnūn and to make some corrections, but Asad did not accept this. For this reason, Ibn al-Qāsim invoked a curse against Asad b. al-Furāt. As a result, Asad was unable to benefit from this book. Later, he went to Sahnūn. He (Sahnūn) prepared his work called "al-Mudawwana." He became the leader of the people of his time. He assumed the office of judge (qāḍī) in Kairouan and remained in this judicial position until he passed away at the age of eighty in this year. May Allah have mercy on him and on us.
