He was among the notables of the Banu Jumah tribe. He was present at the conquest of Khaybar. He was one of those known for zuhd (asceticism) and ʿibāda (devotion in worship). He was appointed as the governor (emir) of Hims by ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, after Abū ʿUbayda. When ʿUmar heard news that he had been severely wounded, he sent him 1000 dinars; however, he distributed all of this money as ṣadaqa (charity), and said to his wife: "We have given this money to someone who will trade on our behalf." By this, he meant that by giving the money for the sake of Allah (Allah), he would earn reward. May Allah be pleased with him.
The Caliph said: He and Muʿāwiya conquered Qaysāriyya together. At that time, both of them were commanders of their respective troops.
