His patronymic is Abū ʿUthmān al-Maghribī. He was originally from Kairouan. He came to Damascus, befriended Abū Khayr al-Aqṭaʿ, and lived for several years as a resident (mujāwir) in Mecca. During the pilgrimage seasons, he did not particularly stand out. He possessed karāma (a saintly wonder). Abū Sulaymān al-Khaṭṭābī and others praised him.
